E-Journal #11 – Self Reflection Part I What did you learn about the world in answer to these questions? Summarize what you learned about the "Big Questions" for our course. You don't need to comment on each country we studied, but rather compare and contrast countries that exemplify differences or similarities, or countries that present a unique perspective.
I think the concept of the ‘ideal’ childhood is too culturally subjective to broadly define. Even within a country, individual views and opinions shape practices regarding children and childhood. Though each country’s view of children and childhood will shape their experiences and practices, I don’t believe there is any one ‘ideal’ childhood anywhere in the world.

This project was the most significant so far in this class, in part due to the fact it was a collaborative effort. After learning about 'ecological contexts' in class - the many factors that contribute to the lives of a developing child, from an immediate to an overarching scale - groups embarked on a quest to investigate the ecological context of children in a variety of countries not covered in our course. My group chose New Zealand. We divided the different 'systems' among us, researched our country, and produced individual posters displaying our research, which we then bound together in a book format. We also wrote a reflection summarizing our work. One difficulty I encountered in working on this project was an inconsistency between the instructions we were given in class and the instructions posted online. However, by reaching out to my professor, I was able to get clarification and complete the assignment.
