Though I am writing about it retrospectively, in revisiting, I realize how much I agonized over this essay. I spent far, far too long writing it, and the length of my drafts were excessive. Luckily, I was self-aware in this process. I utilized my TA's office hours to receive feedback and a second opinion, and was finally able to kill my darlings and restructure, refine, and revise my essay into a manageable state. I have attached both the epically long version (saved for posterity) and the final version below to document the changes.

This was my essay for our take-home midterm, in which we had to place an excerpt from a text in its historical context. I was very proud of the fact that I got 99/100 on this exam (including the in-class portion), as I worked extremely hard on it. So far, the path to becoming an English major is looking good!
