For my final project for my Gothic Literature class, I chose to write a short story inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic using conventions from Gothic literature. This was another assignment that became optional due to the protests against police brutality that shook our nation in the final week of the quarter, but one I was still committed to finishing. I have always loved being able to incorporate my love for creative writing into my other coursework. I also hoped to be able to revise this story to include in applications for creative writing graduate programs. This comment from my professor encouraged me that I was on the right track with this piece, and helped motivate me to continue working on refining and improving my story beyond this course.

This class was one of two that I took in place of the classes I was supposed to take on my London study abroad, with professor Juliet Shields, who was supposed to travel to London with us. For one of my two major assignments in this asynchronous course, we chose a piece of modern media to examine for conventions taken from Gothic literature. I chose BBC's Sherlock, specifically the episode "The Hound of the Baskervilles." I thought that Sherlock would be well suited for this assignment as a modern adaptation of an already classically Victorian and moderately Gothic work. I got good feedback from my professor on this paper, a nice chance to connect in an online age where person-to-person interaction is minimal.
